If your reaction to a tutorial on preventing fraud is..."I don’t need to listen to that because fraud couldn’t possibly happen at my organization." Hold on.
Maybe you feel like everyone in your organization is like family, or that everyone is so committed to the cause that they couldn’t possibly steal from the organization. Of course, that is the case most of the time. Studies have shown, however, that seven percent of non-profit income is lost annually to fraud. And we’ve had a couple cases in the conservation community in recent years. So it could happen to you.
Having good internal controls is a protection for honest staff. If anything is questioned, they can point to others who reviewed and participated in the decision. Plus good internal controls will make your donors, board members and auditor very happy.
Even small organizations can have adequate controls. Listen to the recording and find out the six most important fiscal controls to put into place at your organization.
Presenter: Megan Seibel, TREC’s lead trainer and consultant on fiscal management serves as TREC’s Finance Director and Senior Associate. She has over 25 years of non-profit and financial experience.
