TREC

"People are our most important asset" is often over-used and under-developed

We know our people drive our conservation gains, yet...

TREC can assist with the development of your organization’s internal HR systems.

Human Resources Program

Strengthen the human systems in your organization

As activists, we know that the gains we achieve are driven by the passion, commitment and hard work of our people—both staff and Board. It is easy to say “people are our most important asset,” but this is not always backed up by a well-constructed system of policies and practices.

At TREC we understand that any organization is only as strong as the human systems that underlie the work itself. We know that the culture of the organization sets the tone for staff and for the community’s view of what we do. We also know that it takes tremendous focus to be known as a leader who creates and maintains the systems that attract, motivate and retain our “human capital.”

TREC is happy to help you respond to these critical responsibilities through our Human Resources Assistance Program. Part of TREC’s comprehensive suite of services designed to develop the overall potential of your organization, our Human Resource services align closely with strategic planning, leadership development, fundraising, financial management and other areas to create effective, healthy and highly functional organizations.

How does your organization stack up against the following questions?

  • Are you prepared to make the best hiring decisions?
  • Are your employees and Board members supported with accurate job descriptions, comprehensive orientation, fair compensation, and useful performance feedback?
  • Are they knowledgeable of laws and liabilities when dealing with poor performers or behavioral issues?
  • Does each employee understand his or her role and responsibilities and how they align with your overall priorities? Are decision-making boundaries clear?
  • Do your people feel recognized and rewarded for their contributions—even in the times of scarce resources?
  • Do you understand how to stay within the appropriate legal boundaries for employment?
  •  Does your culture match your mission and strategy?  How well do your personnel policies and practices actively support that culture?

TREC will help you address the challenges inherent in engaging and motivating people to be their most productive for the long run. We offer a broad spectrum of Human Resource training, consulting and coaching services to help strengthen your organization from the inside out.

TREC's Human Resource Program services include:

  • Staff recruiting and supervision. TREC will help you become more proficient in recruiting, interviewing, hiring and onboarding. We can also help you design job announcements and position descriptions, performance metrics and evaluation systems. And we are here to support you if tricky performance issues develop.

We use data from almost 500 environmental nonprofits in the US and Canada to help ensure that your compensation and benefits system is fair and competitive
  • Crafting suitable policies and procedures. TREC will provide you with a variety of templates, tutorials and references to assist with the development of your organization’s internal personnel systems and documentation.

  • Building resilience into everything. We know about burnout! And we can help you create a culture of resilience that can help all your people excel and have a life, too
  • Staying within the letter of employment law. Leading a legally compliant organization is crucial to your success. We will guide you through the risks and liabilities related to Federal, Provincial and State employment laws, and help you develop and document employee policies and procedures that minimize potential liabilities.
  • NOTE: TREC does not provide legal guidance. Please be aware that it is your organization’s responsibility to obtain legal advice and/or review of legal documents as needed.

TREC’s Human Resource Assistance Program is available to all Wilburforce Foundation grantees in the U.S. and Canada. Services are provided after an initial phone interview designed to clarify your particular needs and tailor an appropriate response to them.
