The conservation community is facing very serious challenges. Those of us who work to expand the environmental movement’s successes, preserve wilderness and ensure environmental protection must rethink who we are and how we do our work. External political factors only compound internal challenges that early successes allowed us to overlook. TREC’s new paper, Building a Stronger Conservation Community: Key Challenges and Effective Actions, presents some fundamental ways that grassroots conservation groups can address our movement’s current challenges — by honing mission, planning realistically, rethinking outreach and constituency building, and making some difficult choices about internal functioning.
